Notable Achievements and areas of improvement
Pioneer High School is the flagship of the Ann Arbor Public Schools. As such, we have a long history of honors, awards and achievements. We pride ourselves on being instrumental in the community at large academically, athletically and in the arts. According to US News and World Report in 2014, Pioneer HIgh School is ranked 11th within the State of Michigan, garnering a Silver Medal Award.
This past year we had 28 National Merit Scholars, # of students taking AP exams, multiple qualifiers for DECA's annual international competition, a large number of students in National Honor Society, several winners of the Michigan Math Prize Competition and many students with a 4.0 grade point average. We have AP Government students that have earned second place in the C-SPAN Student Cam documentary competition. We have an Academic Awards Ceremony every year to recognize these and other academic achievements.
Pioneer's music department has several Grammy Awards. Pioneer was twice selected as the National GRAMMY Signature School. We have an active Theater Guild that has placed in theater competitions as well as a successful art and design department. Our students have won many local, state and national art awards and have gone on to work at places such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Disney Animation.
Our athletic department also has many notable achievements. We have 30 school and club sports which have earned a total of 180 State Championship titles. We have students annually participating on our Special Olympics Team, run by Pioneers special education teachers - earning several Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.
Pioneer has 55 active clubs that meet weekly and a restructured Student Government, consisting of 5 different councils committees that focus on helping the community both in and out of school.
We have additional award winning programs: the Argus IMRA Planetarium (the longest continuously run planetarium in the western hemisphere), Innovative Car Design Program and Robotics Team.
The current focus of our Continuous School Improvement is a writing goal. It aims to improve writing in all content areas. Each teacher is focused on self improvement through the use of a Personal Growth Plan, and many make the writing goal part of their PGP.
