Description Of The School
Pioneer High School was the first high school in Ann Arbor, established in 1856 as Ann Arbor High School, and renamed Pioneer High School in 1967. Ann Arbor is the home of the University of Michigan. The community is culturally diverse with approximately 114,000 residents. Ann Arbor Public Schools encompass a 125 square mile area, serving the City of Ann Arbor and part of eight surrounding townships, with a population of over 300,000.
There are approximately 90 classroom teachers, 14 professional support staff, 19 special education staff, 20 general support staff, and 4 administrators. Our professional support staff consists of 6 full-time counselors, a psychologist, a speech pathologist, a social worker, 2 technical support staff, and a part-time nurse.
Pioneer High School is one of three four-year comprehensive high schools and three alternative high schools, with a student enrollment of 1690 at the start of the 2014-2015 school year. The diverse student body at Pioneer consists of the following ethnic breakdown: Caucasian = 57.4%, Asian = 15.1%, African American = 12.7 %, Multi-Ethnic = 6.8%, Hispanic = 4.04%, Middle Eastern = 2.08%, Other = 1.7%, and Native American = .18%.
In addition to being a comprehensive high school, Pioneer houses the self-contained cognitively impaired program with students from other county schools, and is the home of the USA Hockey Program.
Pioneer High School has experienced many changes. Our student body was 3150, during the 2007-2008 school year, and has dropped to its approximate 1600, due to the opening of Skyline High School (the newest of Ann Arbor’s comprehensive high schools) and the closing of Pfizer, in 2008. Younger staff members have voluntarily and involuntarily transferred to Skyline, leaving a more tenured teaching staff at Pioneer. We have had a yearly change in Head Principals since 2007. Our new principal is Tracey Lowder and our new assistant principal is Jason Skiba.
Pioneer has been identified as a Focus School by the state of Michigan due to the achievement gap between the top 30% and bottom 30%. Please see letter below from our school board member Andy Thomas in response to our current ranking.
